PH Firm speaks out after vehicles are banned from council car parks

AN Old Hill private hire operator has hit out at Sandwell Council saying it does not enforce conditions put in place when planning approval is granted for taxi firm premises.

Jacky Kelly, of Kelly’s Cars in Old Hill, spoke out after the council announced it is banning private hire vehicles from its car parks after complaints from shoppers and traders.

She said some taxi firms get planning permission for a bookings office, which they then use as a base.

Jacky said: “Operators apply for planning permission for a booking office where vehicles should not be parked, then use the office as taxi base without any repercussions from planning or licensing.

“Other planning applications are given for a restricted number of vehicles but again these restrictions are not enforced.

“Although I fully agree parking spaces should not be taken up by taxis, I find it quite ironic that councillors are so pleased with the decision.

“If our council planning department was stricter when granting planning applications for taxi offices there would not have been a problem in the first place.”

Cabinet member for neighbourhood services councillor Derek Rowley said: "If anyone has any complaints about how a private hire company is operating they should contact the council and it can be investigated."
