Eight taxis forced off road by police and council checks

EIGHT taxis have been taken off the road in Derby following spot checks by police and the city council.

Twenty-six were checked for defects as part of an ongoing operation. Ten were found to be defective, eight of which were given immediate prohibition notices for offences including bald tyres, broken suspension and defective steering.

PC Lee Simpson, roads policing officer, said: "These results demonstrate that drivers and owners are not inspecting their cars thoroughly enough, which has an impact on road safety and casualty reduction.

"The checks are carried out regularly and I would urge drivers to take the opportunity to inspect their vehicles. If you fail the checks, you could be given a prohibition notice and this will affect your livelihood."

Councillor Sean Marshall, chairman of the council's taxi licensing and sub-committee, said: "These exercises demonstrate that working in partnership leads to vehicles that are not found to be satisfactory having action taken against them to ensure public safety. However, I continue to be disappointed in the number of vehicles that fail the inspection and the lack of routine maintenance that some licensed drivers and vehicle owners undertake on their vehicles."

When the drivers aren't keeping up the maintenance routine there's going to be trouble. It's always the same in Derby when they do a spot check they never pass.

I would bet that most of the steering problems were CV boots. They are a pain in the ar5e. The inner boot has just been made part of the MOT so this would now be a fail where as a few weeks ago it would be a pass.
