Couple of months ago when the students were not long back I dropped off a passenger somewhere near pollock halls. It was about half 11 at night so I thought I'd stop there to see if I could get a student going into town. Another cab pulled in behind me and told me that it was a rank for central cabs only. I said I'd only been driving a couple months so I didn't even know it was a rank and I just came up on the off chance and moved on. So the other night I was out and got a taxi home. We were chatting away and I said I'd made a few mistakes picking up when I shouldn't and I mentioned the pollock halls thing. He said that was rubbish and anyone can pick up there. He happened to be a central driver too. So which driver was right? |

It's on private ground and it is a central only rank. There is a sign next to it saying this. |

Well, a hand goes up and I pick up, end of. It's not an official rank to me. And I don't care if its on private ground. They can prosecute, I'd just love that. It's be worth it just to watch the reaction of smug central drivers, who are usually the first to rip you off anyway, etiquette not in their vocabulary as they abuse others to remedy the deficit of being dragged all over the place by their uncaring company, fined by the high expenses earning committee clique in the company if they refuse But I wouldn't be hanging around there anyway. The chances of getting a decent job are less than zero. This recalls an episode I once had dropping off 5 students there. As usually happens, getting 5 students to divvy up a tipless fare was taking ages. I sat for what seemed an age waiting for these intellectual paragons to calculate the simple maths, then dig into their pockets to come up with the exact fare, the degree of accuracy you'd expect only from accountants, who never tip. Anyway, watching this debacle, while entertaining, I politely requested them to apply some urgency to their exercise, when one of the worthies rounded on me and told me I was a only a taxi driver. I asked this obviously posh English student import what he meant when advised me he was a medical student and that I should watch out because I could end up on HIS operating table sometime. Charming or what? If that's the measure of some supposed intellectuals we're training to be doctors, any wonder the existence of our NHS is precarious. As an aside, have you ever noticed that when a fare is say £4.20 and there are 5 passengers divvying up, the voice who pipes up £1 each is usually the guy who collects the cash for handing over, and the amount paid is exactly £4.20. Imagine having a pal like that in your group? Wanna bet he's the last guy to buy a round, when the others have already had enough and he gets the cheapie.

THe sign at the rank simply says central taxis and gives the company phone number, its an advert made to look like an offical sign it states nothing of whom can and cannot use the rank, advice i was giving from the council was use the rank if you so wish |
