http://www.blackpoolgazette.co.uk/news/ ... -1-4357613 Yes I know, but the judge clearly didn't. Of course if he had been in the Unite Union they would have patted him on the back.

The strange thing about reading that story is I had to purposely look for the words 'private hire'. So in theory if I didn't know to look for it I would have missed it completely and assumed it was a taxi driver involved in this case. I'm sure I'm not the only person who scans when I they read |

I take the view it doesn't matter a toss which licensed vehicle the driver drives. The checks and balances are the same for both sides of the trade, and this point scoring that takes place is a tad sad. Because, as I mentioned last week, victims are still victims.

In my experience they usually use the word taxi or cab to refer to either side. I rarely hear the public use the terms HC or PH. Which I suspect is why both the press and some councils do likewise. |

Beg to differ there, ask the general population what a taxi looks like and theyll probally say a lti vehicle (black cab).At least a few times a week someone will flag me down when a hackney saloon car has just gone by them. |

But that's missing the point slightly. They may have different views as regards what they think they can hail in the street, but that has little to do with the terminology they use. |

Quote: theyll probally say a lti vehicle (black cab). Not a single LTi vehicle operating in LA where I drive. Most hackneys are saloons, a couple of E7's and a whole bunch of Fiat Doblo's. The Cab Direct Peugeot Premier I drive on a Friday is the only one of thase so far. |

I mean if the article used only private hire vehicle or whatever then a lot of people would simply be confused by what it meant. Thus the journalist, the police and the judge all use the word taxi, not only because it avoids confusing the public, but also because the public aren't really that bothered. All they're worried about is that a driver abused his trust, particularly when they were licensed by the local authority. They're not particularly worried that one side of the trade may tarnish the image of the other. I mean, how many times have you heard a member of the public use the proper terminology? If they use the words 'private hire' at all then it's usually with the words taxi or cab, thus not really accurate either. |

The only ones that are bothered at all are some Hackney drivers when it is a PH and some PH drivers when it is a Hackney. They all seem to miss the point that it was a licensed driver. |

Sorry dont agree, what im saying is it would be better if they used the wording private hire/minicab .Now i know what your saying and they dont generally. Why is it then that they cant call a private hire/minicab company a Taxi firm or there not supposed to.? |

Thats why it bothers me because it was a PH not a Taxi ,thanks for clarifying that grandad |
