AS PETROL PRICE REACHES RECORD HIGH MACNEIL HITS OUT AT ‘HIGHWAY ROBBERY’ PM MUST ‘STOP DITHERING AND START DELIVERING’ ACTION ON FUEL PRICES Commenting as the average price of petrol broke through the 140p-a-litre barrier today (Friday), with diesel at a new record of 146.72p, SNP Westminster Transport spokesperson Angus MacNeil MP warned that soaring fuel prices were hindering economic recovery and called for Chancellor to honour his pre-election promise to introduce a Fuel Duty Stabiliser to deliver a permanent stabilisation measure which would bring prices under control. Mr MacNeil said: “David Cameron needs to stop dithering and start delivering action to bring soaring fuel prices down. His silence at the Tories conference in Troon, on one of the most urgent issues facing households and businesses, underlines how out of touch his party is with people in Scotland. “It’s a national scandal that, in an oil rich country like Scotland, we are paying the highest fuel prices in Europe. With the bulk of the pump price made up of tax, the Treasury must stop this highway robbery because soaring fuel prices are hindering economic recovery – we need a permanent stabilisation measure to bring prices under control. “In July 2008, the Tories promised a ‘Fair Fuel Stabiliser’, describing it as a ‘common sense plan’. As well as being common sense, it is unanswerable and fair for Scotland, given that we pay among the highest fuel prices in Europe even as Scottish oil revenues surge into the UK Exchequer. “With record North Sea oil and gas revenues flowing to the Treasury, we need to see some of that money used to bring fuel prices down – and to keep them stable – through a fuel duty regulator. “The Tories and Lib Dems promised action before the election. They have the money – Scotland’s oil money – and the powers to deliver. “If Westminster will not act, the powers should be passed to the Scottish Parliament so that it can. If Scotland had control of fuel duty, the SNP government would introduce a fuel duty regulator to lower prices now.” |

And did Mr MacNeil give any indication of from where/whom he would raise the Revenue lost by this suggestion of his. |

I think the pertinent point is that Osborne promised this and has failed to deliver it. Far from helping with the scandalous price of fuel, he's going to increase the Westminster tax take by another 3p + vat from August, while at the same time he's handed a generous tax cut to himself and his über rich mates. Doesn't this bother either of you? |

Doesn't this bother either of you? It would not make an Iota of differance who was in power...government would up it anyway. Worse still is that the Oil companies are also upping their pump prices by around 4 pence now because they realise it wont wash with the public if they up their prices at a later date when the government adds its whack. its going to make diesel somewhere in the region of £1.52/£1.56 by August..if not more...thats £7.00 a gallon....Scary. |

It's high time governments, of whatever persuasion, found a better way of raising income. It impacts on the price of everything we buy or use, hindering economic recovery and prolonging the recession. Squeezing road users until the pips squeak is not the answer. Find a better way. |

Any sugestions? The simple way may be to go back to the days of 33% income tax and remove a lot of the duty that is on many items. How would that suit? If I remember correctly the level of income tax was reduced and duty increased to give taxpayers "the choice" of how and where they paid their taxes. Taxpayers have "the choice" to buy goods with lower taxes. Well that was the theory. |

Quote: Any suggestions? Well, we could start with a reversal of the recent top rate tax cut. How about a hefty tax on unearned fat cat bonuses? An immediate freeze on fuel duty and a rebate scheme for all commercial users would help too. I won't hold my breath though.

The price of deisel is not stable it only ever goes fecking up, meaning westminster make more unledgered money every day, we should have an agreed pump price of say £1.20 a litre, if the price of fuel goes up, fuel duty should decrease by the same amount, if fuel comes down fuel duty should increase by the same amount, simple a stabilizer is the way to go.This way wee Ed there wouldn't be revenue lost. Only an independent Scotland can stop the fuel rip off VOTE YES P.S can we not set up a Taxi Trade e-petition Alex We carry passengers just like buses, buses get subsidised fuel me thinks, as does the police, Ambulance and fire brigade, im sure i read this somwhere
