Changes to be introduced to improve safety of taxi cabs


A council is introducing changes to the way it licences taxis to help improve vehicle safety.

North West Leicestershire District Council wants to reduce the age of hackney carriages and private hire vehicles in the district.

A set of recommendations have been approved by the council's licensing committee.

It means from October 1, the maximum age, with exceptions, for any vehicle to be allowed to renew a licence will be eight years.

From April 1, next year, that will fall to seven years, then down to six the following year.

Councillor Alison Smith, deputy leader, said: "Our enforcement officers found some older vehicles were not meeting required standards. That's why we are proposing limits to the maximum age."

Exceptions will only be made for purpose-built London-style cabs and where taxis are maintained to a very high standard and subject to six-monthly inspections.

funny that their reasons are the same as our council gave for implementing a similar policy. Whats the betting all these councils attended a conference on licensing somewhere where they were given a lecture by someone claiming that reducing the age of the fleet improves maintainance standards ! :roll: :roll:

I wish councils would get it into their thick heads drivers affect the maintainance of their vehicles far more than the age of their vehicle a much better system would be to for drivers to provide details of how often their vehicles are serviced they would soon know which were the dodgy vehicles then !

You would have to provide details of your maintenance schedule and where you carried out this maintenance. You would also be required to keep records of this maintenance. Buses are required to do this for VOSA. So providing you can satisfy your councils requirements you should be able to do your own servicing.

As i thought not really enforcable,i know you could do it yourself and hand documentation in yourself.If the vehicle passes the council inspection its good enough,theres no need for anything extra

Of course it is enforceable. If you fail to provide the necessary paperwork or you are found to have not actually carried out the required maintenance in accordance with the schedule, the plate is removed from the vehicle.

So i service my cab myself at home and hand a reciept in ? Who proves ive done it ?

we have two compliance checks a year so it should be straightforward to tell if a vehicle was failing on a number of issues that this was not comparable to the service log

So the council implements class room mentality of the 80s were the small minority ruin it for the majority.

It isn't rocket science, target the offenders. 6 monthly tests.

Shame they haven't read government best practive of no age limits.

We have three tests a year here ,still do a lot of my own repairs.

My council wasn't, they are doing the opposite and allowing more and more sh** to carry on being used by the taxi/PH trade. :sad:
