Cabbies see red over colour rule

Dozens of taxi drivers marched through Durham city on Wednesday to protest over plans to impose a white-only colour policy for their cabs.

It follows the refusal by Durham City Council to grant a temporary Hackney Cab licence to a driver for a red car while his white cab is repaired.

The cabbies said previous temporary applications for non-white cars have been granted.

But the council said the decision comes as new policy is being phased in.

The council added that other councils in the country have introduced the same scheme without any problems.

Around 30 protesting drivers, who say the rule is costly and unfair, ended the demonstration peacefully at the council's licensing office.

i think it might be more to do with the fact that white cars are hard to come by on the second hand market.

i mean apart from the police who buys a new white car?

Yes, white used to be a popular colour, but it really went out of fashion.

I think silver is the big colour for new cars at the moment.

We can have any colour we like, most makes, and any advertising that we want.

And that's just the drivers.

You make an interesting point, aside the funny, in that do customers really give a monkeys what colour car it is?

All they seem to be interested in in how clean and safe both vehicle and driver are.

And quite right too.

Here in Renfrewshire the council introduced a policy of white only for taxis a few years ago apparently to help the public distinguish taxis from private hire

The big taxi sign on the roof was always a dead give-away for me

All the best

A valid point, and it reminds me of someone who accused those behind this site of lying, yet went and cuddled up to those that were.

As you say, one rule for them.

From today's Daily Star:

MOTORISTS who buy a white car could find themselves up to £5,000 in the red.

White vehicles lose their value more than any other colour over just 12 months.

But metallic black can increase the value of a one-year-old used motor by as much as £200, new figures have revealed. The survey from motoring industry price bible Glass's Guide also shows that the trade value of white prestige cars such as Mercedes, BMWs or Audis is up to £2,500 less than silver or grey versions - and they are £2,700 cheaper than those in black.

The biggest differences in price can be found in the luxury roadster market.

Glass's spokesman Richard Crosthwaite said: "Buy a Mercedes SL-class or Porsche 911 in white and you can easily expect a trade value after 12 months that is £5,000 lower than if it was in a desirable metallic."

But there are some cases where colour is not a black and white issue. Mr Crosthwaite explained: "The value of red on certain sports cars may perform better than on conventional saloons because buyers feel the colour is more suited to the character of the car."

Silver cars used to depreciate least - but the sheer number of them on the road has now reduced their value.

I suppose that at least means that if the Durham drivers are buying on the second-hand market they will save money, assuming they eventually find a car.
