Faults founds on taxis stopped in city crackdown

Twenty taxis in Derby were stopped and checked for defects during a crackdown on safety.

Police and Derby City Council licensing officers stopped hackney and private hire taxis in the city on Friday.

Four were given immediate prohibition notices for serious defects, including faulty suspension and bodywork corrosion.

Two taxis were referred to MOT test centres for further inspections, 10 were given advisory notices for minor defects and one taxi was fault-free.

PC Lee Simpson said: “These checks were carried out throughout 2011 and we have conducted three so far this year.

“It’s pleasing to see that fewer taxis were found with defective tyres but there is plenty of room for improvement.

“I would like to remind private hire drivers that they are only exempt from wearing seatbelts while they have a fare onboard.

Seatbelts must be worn at all other times unless you have a medical exemption.”

Derby have a pedigree for un-roadworthy cabs.
