CCTV cameras donated to taxi drivers

NINETY closed circuit television cameras have been donated to taxi drivers in Bedford, following the death of their colleague who died after being attacked.

Company PoliceWitness.com has donated the CCTV cameras to the Taxi and Private Car Hire Association in Bedford, and they are set to be distributed among taxi companies throughout the town.

Chief executive Matthew Stockdale decided to donate the cameras to the group after hearing about the death Mehar Dhariwal, who died after he was attacked in January.

Mr Stockdale said: “I saw it on the news and I just thought I have all these spare CCTV cameras sitting in my warehouse and I thought why not donate them to maybe stop this type of thing happening again.

“It’s awful what happened and if having cameras can improve the safety for all these drivers, then that’s much better than them just gathering dust or being chucked away.”

The business venture that has only just started, works with the police to provide the public with CCTV cameras to put in their vehicles to help them if they have been a victim of a crime or if they are involved in any type of road incident.

The company is also working on supplying a new camera that people could have on them that would be visible and would act as a deterrent to potential criminals.

Spokesman for the Taxi and Private Car Hire Association Balal Shah said: “I can’t thank Matthew enough. This is fantastic news for us. We have been working with the council and police on better safety for our drivers, so this is really good.

“If something good like this can come from something so awful and tragic, then that would be the best tribute to Mehar and his family as possible.”
