Guildford cab fares to rise

Those who regular get a taxi in Guildford may notice a small price increase soon in the wake of a decision made by the local council at a meeting last Thursday (22nd March).

Pending the publication and adoption of a new hackney carriage fare chart, the council has agreed to retain the existing fare chart but with an increase of the fuel subcharge from 50p to £1 per journey. They've also commissioned an audit of the methodology to raising fares and have asked for a recommendation as to how to review fares in the future.

The reason for the decision is that the council concluded that the fares were reasonable and reflect current increases in business costs that are associated with hackney carriages.

This ruling might be able to avert a strike being called by the Guildford Hackney Association through the town in July around the time of the Olympics. They had been calling for a fare increase of 2.7% plus new rules to stop unlicensed private cabs picking up passengers.
