'It's a victory for common sense': Labour welcome U-turn after 50 blind residents were denied taxicards WESTMINSTER Council has been forced into a U-turn over taxicards. The scheme aims to provide subsidised transport in private-hire vehicles for people who have serious mobility or visual impairment. Earlier this month Labour opposition councillors revealed that 50 blind residents had been refused a taxicard as they did not claim benefits. The city council this week proposed reviewing its policies and plans to give taxicards to all registered blind residents. Labour group leader Paul Dimoldenberg said: “This is a victory for common sense. We’re delighted with the council’s change of heart.” Cllr Rachael Robathan, cabinet member for adults, said: “The changes we are making will ensure all of those in greatest need of the taxicard scheme will continue to get the benefits it offers. “We believe the changes will protect those who find it most difficult to get around independently which remains a priority to Westminster City Council, despite budgetary pressures.” source: http://www.westendextra.com/news/2012/m ... -denied-ta |
