Police carry out taxi checks

Police in Bristol stopped 58 taxis and ordered seven off the road during a licence check operation in the city centre on Saturday evening (March 31).

It was carried out in conjunction with the city council, the Vehicle and Operator Service Agency (VOSA) and HM Revenue and Customs.

Of the taxis stopped, 14 had defects including accident damage, bald tyres and faulty lights. Seven were taken off the road and their licence suspended pending repairs.

PC Michelle Gozna, of Avon and Somerset's Roads Policing Unit, said: "The aim of the check was to reassure the public that taxis are a safe, legal and an insured form of transport, to remove illegal and unsafe vehicles from the road and to raise awareness of road safety related issues to the public.

"Overall we were pleased to see that the condition of the vehicles was of a good standard. The majority of drivers spoken to were positive about the checks and our efforts to identify unroadworthy vehicles.

"The message to the public is that we will be continuing to work with our partner agencies and taxi drivers to ensure that Bristol taxis are safe, roadworthy and legal."
