Taxi driver arrested over Redcar teen's road death

A TAXI driver has been arrested following the death of a 19-year-old girl in a road accident.

Kirsty Fennon died after being hit by a taxi in the early hours of Friday morning on the A1085 Coast Road between Redcar and Marske.

A 45-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving, police said today.

He has been released on bail pending further inquiries.

Miss Fennon, of York Road, Redcar, was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident.

Cleveland Police are today continuing their appeal for witnesses to the fatal incident, which happened at 4.50am yesterday on a 40mph stretch towards the Marske end of the coast road.

A post-mortem examination was carried out yesterday.

Tributes for Miss Fennon have been made online through social networking sites Facebook and Twitter

One woman said: “They say they take the good end away from us and that’s the truth. RIP Kirsty Fennon sweet dreams babe thinking about you and family and friends.”

Another read: “R.I.P Kirsty Fennon, thoughts go out to her family and friends.”

Another friend simply said: “RIP Kirsty Fennon.”

Police say the tragedy happened about 300 yards from Bydales School near the entrance to Marske.

After the accident, the road was closed from the junction with Green Lane.

The taxi driver stopped at the scene and informed police of the incident.

Miss Fennon was wearing a black jacket with a light coloured top underneath, blue jeans and black boots.

It’s not clear at present whether she was alone at the time, officers said.

Police were also unable to say in which direction Miss Fennon was walking when the accident took place.

The accident took place on a stretch of road where street lights were removed in July 2008 following complaints by locals.

The lights had been placed along a 1.5km stretch of The Stray between Marske and Redcar but were blasted for making the road look “an eyesore”.

All 41 lights were removed by Redcar & Cleveland Council just days after they were installed at a cost of £9,000.

Police are today appealing for anyone who was in the area at the time, or who witnessed the incident, to come forward.

Anyone with any information can contact PC Paul Dixon at the Cleveland and Durham Specialist Operations Department on 101 quoting incident number CVP 64159.

Unlike the one round here who killed someone a few years ago !!!

Miss Fennon was wearing a black jacket with a light coloured top underneath, blue jeans and black boots.

That would have helped

Well done council remove a major safety feature from a road #-o
