Taxi driver stabbed after fight in street

TWO men were involved in a fight which left one of them with multiple stab wounds.

A 27-year-old man suffered injuries to his leg, abdomen and neck during the incident in Watery Lane, Lightwood.

He remains in a stable condition at the University Hospital of North Staffordshire.

Police have arrested a 43-year-old man in connection with the incident, and he remains in custody.

Officers carried out an examination of the scene and a bladed weapon was recovered.

This will now be subject to a detailed forensic examination by experts.

And residents have been asked if they have CCTV footage of the incident.

The two men were known to each other, and it is believed they both worked as taxi drivers.

Sergeant Andy Duffin, from Stoke-on-Trent South Local Policing Team, said: "This was an isolated incident involving two men who are known to each other, one of whom is in custody.

"High visibility patrols have been stepped up in the area to reassure the local community.

"I would encourage anyone with concerns to speak to their local officers."

A spokesman for West Midlands Ambulance Service said: "We were called to the scene at around 7.30pm.

"A first responder, a rapid response vehicle, a basics doctor and an ambulance were all in attendance.

"The ambulance crew, accompanied by the doctor, transported a man in his 20s to hospital."

Residents in Watery Lane said they were unaware of who the men were, or what they had been fighting about.

One resident, who did not wish to be named, said: "The police came knocking on our door at about 8.30pm, and asked if we'd seen anything. They also asked if we had any CCTV.

"The police didn't say what had happened, just that it involved two taxi drivers."

Another resident said: "I don't know what happened but I came home to find the police had cordoned off the end of the street."

A resident of nearby Upper Belgrave Road, who walks along Watery Lane with his dog twice a day, said: "I didn't go out on Tuesday night, because someone told me the police were out. But I didn't know that it was a stabbing that had taken place.

"The road is a dead end but you do see people hanging around near there and there's always cars going past.

"It's worrying to think something like this can happen so close to your home but at least it doesn't sound like an unprovoked attack on a stranger."
