Should stretch Limos need a license in Wisbech, March and Chatteris..? Stretch limos and other vehicles used to ferry people to proms, weddings and special occasions in the Fens could soon need a license. Fenland District Council has put the proposal out for public consultation following fears raised about potential dangers to passengers. Concerns have been expressed about overcrowding, inadequate inspections and drivers who may have criminal convictions. Fenland wants to bring such vehicles and their drivers under its private hire licensing regime. But it says that if the proposals are adopted it will adopt a flexible approach and treat each individual case on its merits. Details of the 12-week consultation were published on April 11 and it will run until July 4. The demand for stretch limousines has been growing in Fenland. They are often used for social events such as college balls. Kit Owen, Fenland’s portfolio holder responsible for licensing, said: “These sort of vehicles are increasingly popular and add to the fun of special occasions. We understand that - we’re not killjoys and we will make every effort to enable people to go on using them. But we have a duty to ensure public safety and we can’t ignore the potential dangers posed by the lack of proper controls. “Our proposals are aimed mainly at stretched limousines but would also cover other kinds of vehicles that are commonly used.” source: http://www.edp24.co.uk/news/should_stre ... _1_1346925 |

These are the same carrot crunchers that willingly debated taxis having meters a few weeks back....without giving a flying f*ck about how appropriate they were. CC |

How does the market stand overall compared to five years ago? What's that got to do with the price of butter? They either need licensing or they don't. IMO they do; they carry the public for hire and reward. End of. |

Indeed I think most of us have garnered the impression that it's been a bit of a bloodbath, but it would be interesting to see concrete figures. And also interesting to ascertain the reasons for this, whether it be fashion trends, the encroachment of the licensing regime or the economic downturn. A mixture of all three, at a rough guess. |

I would put the economic climate as the main reason, followed by issue of the licensing process, and lastly the fact that they are tacky old hat sh**.

Yes, maybe the article is correct after all then - because it's always a few years behind everywhere else it's currently the only part of the country where the market for limos is expanding. |

Always wondered why it's allowed for women/children to hang out the window of a moving vehicle and scream at passers by. Isn't there a law that requires rear passengers to wear seat belts
