Harborne taxi firm to transport veterans to Netherlands for libertation celebrations

A Harborne taxi firm will join an army of cabbies to transport World War Two veterans from Birmingham to the Netherlands to commerate the liberation of the country from the Nazis.

TOA Taxis will collect eight former soldiers in Victoria Square on May 2 and the convoy will head to Harwich Harbour to await an overnight ferry to Holland.

They will be joined by another 59 cabs, mostly from London, carrying 112 veterans, all over 85, and travel to Arnhem to meet surviving Dutch comrades for the country’s Liberation Day celebrations on May 5.

The event has been organised by the London Taxi Benevolent Association for War Disabled, formed in 1948.

Brian Lee, secretary at TOA Taxis, said: “This is such a privilege for the company to be transporting our brave soldiers back to a destination where they fought for the UK and neighbouring countries.

“I’m even lucky enough to be actually driving on this event and all of us here at TOA Taxis are very happy to support the London Taxi Benevolent Association for War Disabled charity.”

The British veterans fought alongside American, Canadian and Polish soldiers for the liberation of the Netherlands.
