Cabbies' new training opens door to golden era

SIXTY Bristol taxi drivers have become "Gold Standard" cabbies after undergoing training in customer care.

The drivers of Hackney Carriages and private hire vehicles took up training organised by Bristol City Council at Easton Leisure Centre.

Since the training course was introduced by the council's licensing department in 2010, almost 200 drivers have gained the gold standard.

On the course, drivers learned literacy, numeracy and map reading skills but its focus was on passenger care and meeting the needs of disabled customers.

Bristol's Lord Mayor Geoff Gollop said: "This course is unusual in the emphasis it places on training our drivers to offer a high standard of customer care for all passengers including those with disabilities so that all passengers can enjoy a safe and comfortable journey."

City councillor David Morris, chairman of the council's public safety protection committee, said: "This course is designed to encourage drivers to be good ambassadors for Bristol. It's vital that our taxi drivers are good Bristol ambassadors to welcome visitors."

Fellow city councillor Guy Poultney, cabinet member for neighbourhoods, said: "It's brilliant to see these drivers getting recognised for their commitment to providing a better service.

"The taxi trade is so important to the city."
