That would mean that 4 people who phoned for a cab after 23.00 and did a jouney of 1 mile would be
charged £8.40!!!!
Thats the way to kill your trade off completly

If a meter is fitted to a private hire vehicle it must be used if the journey starts and ends in Guildford Borough. If however, it starts inside Guildford Borough but ends outside the borough then a fare can be agreed with the driver before the journey commences. The meter does not have to be used in this case, but the fare agreed should not exceed the metered rate.

Talk about making the law up as you go along. ](*,)

How the f**k would you know if the quoted fare is more than the meter if you dont meter it?? and since when did they start
controlling fares outside of the licensing area?

When i started private hire 10 years ago the meter started at £2.40 at day rate 7am-11pm and £3.60 11pm-7am-people got 6/7th or 7/8th of a mile before it kicked up.On a booking of 4 people extras were £1.50 (30p per person and 30p booking fee) Obviously on a booking for one extras were just 60p.Now a booking of four is extras of £3.50!!! Plus start off of £3 or £4 depending on time of day or if on sunday all day.Extras being £1 fuel surcharge on EVERY FARE,booking charge of £1 and 50p for each person in excess of one=£3.50 max for full normal car IN EXTRAS!!!!

50p fuel surcharge has only just come in as fuel went past 140p a litre (the stipulation for the introduction of the charge) and now it has gone up another 50p to £1 eventhough fuel has only just gone to 145.9-149.9 litre diesel. The hackneys threatened to strike if the new 50p add on hadnt been voted in during the olympics.

What spaceinvader said. Plus when other businesses costs increase they vary their prices accordingly, fuel goes up so the hauliers increase the price charged to supermarkets, in turn the supermarkets increase their prices to the consumer. When the wholesale price of crude goes up the gas/electric companies put their bills up as do the petrol stations etc.

So everyone charges higher prices to maintain the same profit margin, yet any increase in costs has to be absorbed by the cabbie - they can't increase prices until allowed by the council and that might only be every 2,3 or even 4 years and then it's usually by a paltry 20p or so which often doesn't even cover the rise in fuel never mind the other expenses. In short every cost increase is a cut to your profits, everyone else raises their prices to cover this, why not cabbies ?

Just to add to what spaceinvader said, I'm earning more than I did 10 years ago purely because of fare increases. However due to increases in all the other running costs my PROFITS are the same, if not less than they were ten years ago.

I base my figures on the average profits per hour over a whole year (total income - total expenditure / total no. of hours worked per year) which shows both income and expenditure have increased but the hourly rate remains roughly the same. What the figures do reveal are that in order to maintain a profit of £6 per hour I have to take an average 'on the meter' of £12 p/h, ten years ago it was just £9 for a £6 profit.
