Appeal as taxi driver robbed at knifepoint

A taxi driver was robbed at knifepoint in Chorley last night.

Police are now appealing for witnesses who may have seen the incident, which took place at around 11:50pm.

It happened after a call was made to order a taxi for a pick up from Lorne Street.

The taxi arrived a few minutes later and three men got into the car.

One man got into the front of the taxi and two in the back. One of the men produced a knife and demanded money from the driver.

The driver handed over his takings for that evening and the three men got out of the car and ran down an alleyway towards Carrington Road.

Detectives are investigating and are appealing for anyone with any information to come forward.

Detective Inspector John Roy said, “I would appeal to anyone who has any information or who may have been in the area around that time that saw anything suspicious to come forward and contact us.

“Fortunately, offences like these do not happen regularly in the area and the victim was not hurt, although he has been left extremely shaken following what was a frightening ordeal so if anyone does have any information then I would urge them to contact the police.”

The man who got into the front of the car has been described as white, between 25 and 30 years of age and around five feet seven inches tall, of stocky build with a noticeably large stomach. He was softly spoken but had a Chorley accent and was wearing dark clothing and a black woollen hat.

The two men who got into the back of the taxi were described as white, between 25 to 30 years of age and were both also wearing dark clothing and black hats.

Anyone with any information can contact police by calling 101 and quoting log number LC-20120501-1703 or alternatively, information can be passed to the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 or on-line at Crimestoppers-uk.org.

No personal details are taken, information is not traced or recorded and you will not go to court.
