£450 fine for punching taxi driver

A night on the Glayva ended with a £450 fine for a 24-year-old Newton Stewart man when he appeared for sentencing at Stranraer Sheriff Court this week after admitting punching a taxi driver.

Scott Allan, 2 Princes Street, pled guilty at a previous diet to assaulting Steven Wise in South Main Street, Wigtown, on January 22, by repeatedly punching him on the body.

Procurator fiscal depute Gemma Hinds told the court the accused had been out drinking with three male friends when a taxi was called for them at around midnight. His pals got into the taxi but there was no room for Allan, although he still attempted to get into the back of the cab. This led to a disagreement on the pavement between the accused and the taxi driver, who had got out of his vehicle. The row became physical and, on the slippy pavement, both men lost their footing and ended up on the ground where Allan continued to punch the complainer. The taxi driver was not injured.

Defending, agent Joe Baxter said on the day in question Allan had been drinking since five in the afternoon and by the time of the offence had consumed “a considerable amount of alcohol”. His recollection of the evening was so hazy he only found out he had been knocking back the liqueur Glayva when told by the barman who served him the following day.

The solicitor added that the accused and the taxi driver had made their peace by shaking hands after the incident.

Sheriff Kenneth Robb advised Allan to “cut down on your drinking”.
