Knife robber targets female taxi drivers in Cheltenham

TAXI firms in Cheltenham are on alert following reports a knife-toting robber has targeted female drivers.

Police have warned cabbies across the town to be vigilant after a man attempted to rob a driver at knife-point.

Chillingly, the suspect called the taxi firm and asked specifically for a woman driver minutes before he attempted the robbery.

CCTV footage released by the force shows him pacing up and down before making a call from a public phone box.

Police said there was no evidence of a sexual motive in requesting a woman – but that there was a chance he thought it would be easier to overpower a female victim. Taxi drivers reacted with shock at the news.

Di Mitten, of Central Taxis, in Royal Well Road, said: "It is a concern because drivers are vulnerable.

"In our profession you have to remember you don't know who you've got in your car.

"There are times when people call and ask specially for a female driver. For instance, it could be a situation where a man is calling to have his daughter picked up. But we tell all our drivers to keep their eyes open and be careful. That's all you can do."

Donna Johnson, of Easy Cars in Dill Avenue, added: "It is pretty scary if someone is targeting women drivers.

"You don't get many female taxi drivers and perhaps it's because of the type of work."

The incident took place at 10pm on Sunday outside the Co-Op in Hester's Way Road.

After being threatened at knife point, the driver managed to get out of the car without parting with any cash. The perpetrator then ran off in the direction of Village Road.

The victim is understood to have been shaken by the incident, but has carried on working. Police praised him for his bravery and urged anyone with information to come forward. Force spokesman Chris Jackson said: "It is unusual that this man asked for a female taxi driver and it does raise some concerns.

"It is possible he thought a female driver might be more vulnerable if he was planning to carry out the robbery.

"I would urge taxi drivers to exercise caution – especially if a situation like that arises. If a man is asking specially for a female driver then it would be worth asking why. If drivers are concerned then they should contact police."

The would-be robber was white, 5ft 10ins tall, in his early 20s and wearing a light grey hoodie, black gloves and a black scarf over his mouth.

Anyone with information can call police on 101. Alternatively call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
