REFORMING THE LAW OF TAXI AND
PRIVATE HIRE SERVICES
A Consultation Paper

1.15 We also provisionally propose that the power to limit the number of taxis allowed
to operate in a licensing area should be removed. We accept that there are some
good arguments for retaining the power (although not on the existing basis of a
bureaucratic assessment of unmet demand), but provisionally consider that on
balance quantity regulation is not justified.

So the Skull and Taylor got it right. We now have the Law Commission considering that restriction is not justified.

Now you can bet your bottom dollar that these legal eagles were well aware of Equality issues, Human Rights legislation, when they compiled this. What goes round, comes round - to Scotland. :wink:

Restriction is on its way out. That's what Aberdeen realised before. And it will come to Edinburgh.

Personally I hope they do. Because it would be a timely reminder before the independence vote of parochial Scot's propensity for feckwittery.

Kenny Macaskil told me the other day that the Scottish Government are still working on their own white paper concerning Taxi regulation and restriction :roll: A point to note is my document concerning an alternative to full de-restriction, yes the medallion system has recieved very positive reviews, with a labour/snp coalition in Edinburgh there is absolute no chance of De-restriction.

The medallion system is not an alternative to the status quo but a big alternative to the total destruction of our trade by the likes of Taylor (Jim) and Skully :wink:

I think everyone knows, in their heart of hearts, the inevitability of the situation. You can't have one group of people, denying another, unfettered access to the tools of their trade, and benefiting as a result.

It simply isn't right. :-|

Keny Mac askill talks in this months On the rank Mag about protecting both Taxi and Ph Trades from organised crime gangs, he accepts that some areas are more at risk than others, aknowledging in my book that a difference in regulation and restriction will continue for years to come, im sure Edinburgh is classified as high risk as far as the infiltration by organised crime gangs is concerned :wink: De-restriction will not happen, no chance :D

Dougie, what are you talking about? De-restriction doesn't mean deregulation, if anything, De-restriction could mean more regulation and not less.

Oh and Dougie, if the council, pulled the plug, tomorrow, it would simply mean licensed drivers becoming owners. Don't you get it Dougie, the same guy driving his own taxi?

How does any of the above have anything to do with organised crime?


Dougie, I hope for your sake the council doesn't pull the plug and introduce psych testing as part of the new regulation. #-o

Gazzer, are you really going to tell me if it becomes totally open you are going to bother getting a cab yourself, I'm thinking of shiftin mine soon, I'm up for insurance renawal and from the things I've heard about this years premiums it the one that broke the camels back for me, I can't see the point in sitting around all day for what ends up £2 ph if I'm lucky, I can get 3X that much with no worry driving a van or a bus, the only thing that stops me is I like to please myself, but if the policy is going to be basically 40% higher than it was 2 years ago then I think it's time to bow out and focus on being a right pita to all and sundry.
