Terrifying attack as Leicester taxi driver feared for his life

A taxi driver has told of his terror after he was beaten up and robbed by four passengers.

Harun Shah Zaman, 31, was headbutted by one man, while another punched him in the head and face, at about 3.15am on Saturday.

Two women they were with joined in, before the group made off with Mr Zaman's money and belongings, leaving him terrified and badly bruised.

The father-of-two from Humberstone, Leicester, said: "I have no idea why it happened but I was absolutely terrified. It was in the middle of the town and people just stood and stared.

"They were so aggressive and angry. When he had his arm round my neck I could not breathe. I thought I was going to be strangled and my head started to feel strange.

"If this had been outside their home, or somewhere less busy, I really think they could have killed me. They would not have stopped."

The incident happened when Mr Zaman picked up the two men and two women from Platinum Lace gentleman's club in Abbey Street, Leicester, at about 3.05am.

Inside the taxi, the group began arguing and one of the men tried to climb out while the car was moving, close to Belvoir Street, and then ripped the latch off a window.

The group began bashing the partition window, before one girl reached through the cash-slot and grabbed Mr Zaman's shirt.

He pulled up at the corner of Millstone Lane and Pocklington's Walk, where he knew other taxis would be waiting, and told the group to leave.

They got out of the car, but then opened the driver's door.

One man grabbed Mr Zaman in a headlock and headbutted him, while the other punched him in the face and head.

The girls joined in, hitting his body and arms, before the group stole his wallet, cash bag containing £80, mobile phone, car keys and sat nav – which they smashed on the street – and ran off down Pocklington's Walk.

Mr Zaman has been left with two black eyes and bruises to his head, body, arms and legs.

He said he did not know if he would ever feel able to return to work as a taxi driver and has not left the house since the attack.

His attackers have been described as white and in their early 20s.

One man was wearing a white shirt, dark trousers and a jacket, while the other was wearing a grey and white striped T-shirt and jeans.

The girls were wearing white tops and shorts and both had red bangle bracelets. It is thought they could be from the Thurnby area.

A police spokeswoman said inquiries were ongoing.

Anyone with information is asked to call police on 101 or Crimestoppers, which is free and anonymous, on 0800 555 111.
