Arrow Cars wins two-year Manchester Airport extension

Taxi firm Arrow Cars has been handed a two-year extension to its controversial contract to provide private hire services at Manchester Airport.

Leeds-based Arrow was originally handed a five-year contract by Manchester Airports Group in May last year, and now employs 20 staff at the airport.

But the arrangement prompted Manchester black cab drivers to threaten legal action over what they claimed were anti-competitive practices at the Airport.

Manchester Cab Committee claimed Arrow had been given preferential treatment which restricted rival companies, and its complaint focused on the Airport’s website booking facility for taxis, as well as booking kiosks at the three main terminals, which it said favoured Arrow Cars at the expense of rivals.

Now, one year into the original deal, the contract has been extended until October 2018.

Richard Hill, head of retail operations for Manchester Airports Group, said: “We are delighted to reward Arrow with this extended contract after one year of their initial contract.

“They have delivered a first-class service to our passengers befitting our high standards of customer service.”

Arrow, which runs similar operations at Leeds-Bradford and East Midlands airports, said it plans to invest a six-figure sum in a new office at Manchester's Terminal One to improve customer service.

Arrow chairman Dave Richmond said: “We will continue to invest, be innovative and be customer focused to continue to deliver an exceptional service for passengers of Manchester Airport and look forward to growing our business with the airport for many years to come.”

The Manchester Cab Committee is made up of the GMB Union, Taxi Owners and Drivers Association, Airport Taxi Association and taxi firms Mantax and Taxifone.

Why would the Airport group extend a deal that is only one year into a five year contract. ?

I think the following quote tells us why, this extension was granted because of the carrot extended by Arrow Cars of a "six figure sum investment". The deal is done, I will not be surprised if there are further moves against the Hacks on site at the Airport, very soon.
