Police crack down on drunk revellers

7:00pm Thursday 24th May 2012

Revellers arriving in Colchester worse for wear after drinking at home will be sent straight home under a new police intitiative.

Police want to get tough on people getting tanked up on cheap booze before hitting the town, known as preloading.

Officers will hail a cab for intoxicated pub and club-goers and send them home.

Tony Saunders, chairman of Colchester Hackney Carriage Association, said half the town will be in taxis.

He said: “It is a good idea in theory, but I don’t think it will work.

“With the cheap supermarket deals, more and more girls seem to have got a bottle of vodka and go around each other’s houses to get ready and so they are drunk. There are so many drunk people in the town at the weekend a lot of these people must have been drunk when they arrived.”

Colchester MP Sir Bob Russell said taxi drivers should not be put under pressure to take the drunks home. He said an easy-to-clean van should be used to cart drunks home.

He said: “There is a real danger this person may be sick in the back of the taxi which means the vehicle is then off road for several hours and loses income.

“Times are hard for taxi drivers, without this.”

Colchester was the subject of Channel 4 documentary Party Paramedics this January, which branded it one of Britain’s hardest drinking towns.

Amanda Halsey, manager of the Castle Inn in Colchester’s High Street, said she thought a cab home was too lenient for drunks.

She said: “The ones that come in absolutely hammered cause more trouble than anybody.

“Most of the people who we have trouble with haven’t even had a drink in here, but have had cheap drink from supermarkets.

“A cab home is too lenient, an on-the-spot fine would be perfect.

“Years ago you could only buy wines and spirits from the supermarket at Christmas, but now you can buy crates.

“It is not good for any one.”

A spokesman for the Colchester Town policing team said: “We are determined the town centre should be a place for everyone to enjoy.

“We will continue to rigorously target drunkenness.

“We are looking at the issue of preloading, when people abuse alcohol at home prior to coming to town.

“The message is very clear – be responsible and if you turn up in town drunk then expect to put back in a cab and sent home.”

One of the sensible MPs.

I like his idea of taking them home in a van, but isn't there a hose-pipe ban?

I don't remember only being able to buy wines and spirits from supermarkets at Christmas. As far as I am aware you could always buy it at any time of year.

Imagine this

Tesco etc can no longer sell cheap beer and spirit's, oh my oh my folks would find it better to go to a pub and socialize wouldn't they, the knock effect would be devastating, ppl who talk and know each other, tax generated by sales and supply chains like cabs and food supplier's, oh such a bad idea eh.

The sooner Scotland's Minimum Sale Price (per Unit) is enacted the better.

It may not be the total solution, but it hasn't been tried yet and might go some way to solving the problem of reducing the difference between Pub Price and Supermarket Price.

I agree and if it takes cheap drink out of the pocket money range, so much the better.

Typical coppers dump a drunk on you and then you get mugged beaten up spewed on, dont you love EM? still now Camerons clowns are making them redundant maybe they will make all cabbies special constables? Anyone got any handcuffs?

Remember in the sixties the saying " save police time beat yourself up" modern version "hang about we will load up a drunk for you"

why shouldnt gargle be cheap just because many abuse it? bang em up! oops forgot no coppers to nick em!

Purely a personal opinion of course :D

Do you have a better idea to stop plastic bottles of cider and superlager being sold to kids for buttons?

Tougher penalties for those who sell kids booze.

Tougher penalties for adults who get paraletic drunk and commit crime.

However, we know it won't happen........................

Let me get this right, the supermarkets have sold alcohol at below cost price which has in turn pretty much driven all the off Licenses bust. So now the very same supermarkets are calling for minimum pricing....The best part, the Goyim are calling for it as well. =D> =D>

Rather like the same supermarkets selling all the bare essentials at cost or bellow resulting in sending all the local shops bust. Once there all gone the very same supermarkets then open "local" shops with increased pricing structures....The best part, the Goyim use them. =D> =D>

If the problem was merely pricing then why don't our neighbors in southern European have the same problem, were alcohol is cheaper than here.
Same with levels of drug abuse, materialism, spousal abuse, child abuse, Crime in general...the list in endless. It is easy for politician to blame cheap alcohol, rather like the comment about wanton Violence during the riots.

Taxeman your right of course. its cheap on the continent is their problem as bad? no !

Is it gormless semi literate idiots with no self respect? or is it lack of education, future, work, hope, housing, training, opportunity for so many which boils over and they release their frustration in a drunken mind numbing escape from reality?

Mind old bill seem to have vanished from this debate [save police time beat yourself up] 2012 load up a drunk !

A personal opinion of course!

Hang on a minute what is the difference between taking people home before they've been up the club or after ? Are they going to be less drunk by 3 am and just because they are preloaded doesn't make them more likely to puke up on the way home I would say the risk is the same fetching them in or taking them straight home again surely ?

Indeed the average punter is probably worse at 3am, but perhaps it looks like the police are forcing drivers to take drunks rather than brooming them.

I mean, no doubt we've all had police shoving drunks into our cars that we'd rather not take, and would not like that to be a regular occurence.

I don't take people who are obviously too drunk so I certainly wouldn't accept a fare from a policeman because they were too drunk.
