Taxi firms drive ahead in merger

THE BIGGEST two taxi-firms in Hucknall have merged.

The amalgamation has taken place between A2B CARS, which is based on Chapel Street, and the long-standing BELLS company, of nearby Baker Street.

The company will operate under the name of A2B Cars and continue to work from both sites.

Business development manager Dave Scott said: “The new company will offer a comprehensive range of services for all our customers.

“We now have a fleet of more than 100 vehicles, making us the largest taxi company in the Ashfield licensed area.

“As part of the merger, our main aim is to provide new and existing customers with first-class services, including cheaper fares.”

“Because of this merger, A2B cars can offer existing Bells customers new services such as in-car credit-card provision, GPS-tracked drivers, callback and Internet booking.”

Freephones for the company in Hucknall are located at the Argos, B&M Bargains, Tesco, Wilkinson and Aldi stores in Hucknall. A new freephone has also been installed in the Morrisons superstore at Kirkby-in-Ashfield.

Speculation about Bells being taken over by another taxi firm, County Cars, last year did not materialise.

Mr Scott said: “Our drivers are predominantly Hucknall people, and I have lived in the town for 23 years.

“For regular journeys like school trips, we will set a fare to let customers know how much they will be paying.

“The merger is quite a big thing for Hucknall as a whole and I feel very enthusiastic about it.”

I believe they call that 'churnalism'.

A2B have hit the Ashfield Area over the last two years, they've been eating up small companies like Bells of Hucknall for a small amount. They didn't mention Tom Bell (the owner of Bells Taxis) has retired. I think they only had 5 or six cars, they were a very small company. What Dave Scott fails to mention is the amount of times his 100 vehicles are sat about doing nothing or are sat plying for hire in Hucknall and Kirkby outside the supermarkets. Dave Scott fails to tell the Hucknall Dispatch that some of his drivers aren't licensed by Ashfield District Council, some are licensed by Bolsover Council working out of their licensed areas.

There's only one winner when there's low fares and that's the customer, the problems start when the drivers start moaning that they aren't earning any money and the company have to put the rates up. The customer won't be happy, they'll have a moan at the driver who won't be feeling any of the increase because A2B will have increased the rental fee for the cars. I had one this morning 4am, job was quoted at £14, he got in and said, I usually get this for £8 with the company I use regular, I said why didn't you phone them? He said they weren't answering the phones. My reply was, good company they are if they don't answer their phones aren't they??
