Burnley cabbie attacked fellow driver

8:00pm Sunday 27th May 2012

Ill feeling between two cabbies turned to violence when one attacked the other, a court was told.

Burnley Crown Court heard how Ghulam Abbas, 50, had blocked in Faisal Taseem's vehicle and the victim was then punched by both Abbas and his son-in-law, Naveed Asghar, 34.

He went to the ground and the defendants then left as passers-by called the emergency services.

The victim was left with swelling and bruises to his face and scratches and complained to his doctor some months later he was still suffering from pain and discomfort in his right shoulder.

Asghar, of Redvers Street, and Abbas, of Hurtley Street, both Burnley, admitted assault causing actual bodily harm. They were each given a two year conditional discharge.

Sarah Johnston, prosecuting, said the victim was a Hackney Carriage driver with Croft Street taxis in Burnley, as were the defendants. There was some ill feeling between Abbas and the victim.

Last February 1, the victim was working and there had been some swearing and verbal abuse between he and Abbas earlier in the day. In the afternoon, he left the taxi rank and could see the defendants in their cabs not far behind him.

Miss Johnston said the victim pulled over to let a passenger out and Abbas blocked him in.

Abbas then approached the victim's vehicle, he eventually got out and he was assaulted by the defendants, who punched him in the face.

The defendants were arrested and interviewed. Abbas told police of a past of ill feeling between him and the victim, but denied being the aggressor. Asghar denied assault. Neither defendant had any previous convictions.

Sentencing, Judge Beverley Lunt said the defendants had both been of impeccable character, it had all got completely out of hand and they had lost their good names and their jobs.
