Says Busy Body ! A RESIDENT has raised safety fears by claiming that a public car park on a South Tyneside estate is being used as an ‘unofficial taxi rank’. Since the turn of the month, several taxis have been seen using the resident and visitor car park between Gerald Street and Oswald Street in Whiteleas, South Shields, as a waiting area between fares. The piece of land is yards from a children’s play park. Resident Victor Gray, 66, claims the presence of taxis coming and going several times a day is creating a road ‘bottleneck’ and endangering public safety. But a spokeswoman for one of the firms using the parking bay says the cabbies were not breaking any law. Mr Gray said: “This just started a few weeks ago and seems to have coincided with the closure of a couple of taxi depots around the town. “The play area is very popular with children of all ages and it can’t be a good idea for taxis to be operating so close to it. “There was a taxi depot at the back of the Red Duster pub, but that has closed. “There was also one at The Mill pub, but they don’t seem to be operating from there anymore. “The taxis wait there until they get a fare, and then they’re off. “I’m not saying it’s illegal but it is adding to an existing bottleneck in that area. |

We used to park on some land until a resident complained. The LO asked us to move but told us we didn't have to, we did anyway. A week later they got burgled and asked in the paper if 'any taxi drivers had seen anything as there's usually a few parked nearby'
