Seventeen taxi licences suspended TAXI inspectors ordered 17 vehicles off the road during a night of safety spot checks. The police, city council licensing enforcement team and Vehicle and Operator Services Agency stopped 91 private hire and hackney cabs on Saturday night, it emerged yesterday. Tax inspectors and council housing benefit officers also took part in the crackdown, checking to see whether drivers were working while claiming benefit. The licences of the 17 vehicles found to be operating illegally were suspended with immediate effect until work needed to bring them up to scratch is carried out. The majority of problems identified concerned defective fire extinguishers, tyres, lights and seat belts. David Morris, left, the chairman of the council's public safety and protection committee, said: "The majority of taxis on Bristol's roads are legal and safe, and these operations are welcomed by the taxi trade." Police Inspector Keith Rundle said: "Thanks to ongoing operations like this one people in Bristol can be assured that they are travelling in vehicles that are roadworthy and that they are being driven by legitimate drivers." http://www.thisisbristol.co.uk/Seventee ... story.html |
