“I accept your shame and self disgust are genuine – you are not a danger to the public.”

The judge added that there was a choice between a short but ineffective prison sentence or long-term supervision and treatment.

“It is in the public interest to make a three-year community order.”

Mr Michael Grey, defending, said Binding, of Tinkers Green Road in Wilnecote, had had to hand in his licence as a taxi driver as a result of these offences.

Binding, who was of previous good character, was “full of shame and self disgust.”

Twice divorced, he was living alone in his now deceased father’s house and started accessing legitimate adult porn, but then moved on to children.

“It started out as curiosity. It may be curiosity turned into habit and then some form of compulsion to look at these images.

Police carried out a search raid on the home of Robert Binding in October last year and seized his computer. Appearing before Stafford Crown Court last Wednesday (June 6), he admitted four charges of making indecent images of children and one of possessing extreme pornography.
