Though you may find, as I have, that the bloody thing may route you miles out of your way. Had one for a year now, and it tends to direct you onto the tourist routes. I only use it to find my way around towns and villages I am unfamiliar with. Testing it recently on a job from Lincoln to an address in worksop, the advised route was 47 miles! You could be accused of going the long way if you follow it's directions. If you have bought one recently, the next time you are out of your area, test it for a return route, and see if it directs you the shortest way. The voice is female, so that may be the reason...

Its oviouse that you have not set it to take you the shortest route, or found the other voice options and you could have it to far away from the windscreen. Yes iv tryed it and it took me the shortest rout every time you have to go into the preferances to do it, ie fastest shortest try reading the instructions.

You say ph drivers dont need them
They do in skelmesdale Lancashire, I was in 1 of theres last week and the driver did not know where he was going, he kept asking his base for directions, saying his fair was not from there, even though my wife was brought up there and knew the rout like the back of her hand.
I had to show him,the way, then I showed him my badge when the meter turned £8.00 when the fair should have only been £4.20 and the look of horrer on his face when he knew he had been rumbled as a total arse the meter went off sharpish, dont talk to me about ph drives they should be given a knolage test befor they get there badge thats if the get one.
Im not taring every ph driver just those with no brain sells who dont listen to there passangers, or ask them where there destination is if they dont know befor geting a runing comentary from there base

guess each part of the country is diffent then, because in cardiff both hackney and ph have to take the same knowledge tests, and as far as i can make out from the info pack the council gave me, they both have to go through near enought the same application process, same crbs, same medicals, same knowledge etc

I think you will find that's the norm in most places.

A case can be made for not making PH drivers do the same knowledge as cab drivers, but I much prefer drivers to have an idea of where they are going.
