Nuneaton taxi driver to stand trial over death of man found lying in road

A NUNEATON taxi driver will stand trial over the death of a man who was found lying in a road yards from his own front door.

Peter Southall, 57, of Edinburgh Road, Nuneaton, has been charged with manslaughter in connection with the incident, which happened in Burnaby Close, Nuneaton, last October.

Police were called in the early hours when 52-year-old Ian Smith was discovered with serious head and internal injuries near his home.

He was taken to University Hospital, Coventry, but died 16 hours later.

Subsequent police enquires revealed he may have been run over by a vehicle.

Mr Smith, known locally as Wobbly, was a former Coventry car worker and avid Sky Blues fan. He lived on his own and had been socialising at a Stockingford pub on the night of the tragedy.

Southall appeared before Nuneaton magistrates yesterday when he was commited, on conditional bail, to Warwick Crown Court for a preliminary hearing on July 26.

I suspect even if acquitted, the Sub Committee may still have issues as to whether he is 'Fit & Proper' following McCool v Rushcliffe BC....!
