The use of stretch limos as taxi cabs will stay banned in South Norfolk, district councillors have ruled.

The authority's licensing and appeals committee rejected an application on Monday from Tivetshall businessman Lee Tutton to licence his left-hand drive stretch limo for private hire.

The committee upheld its policy permitting right-hand drive vehicles carrying a maximum of eight passengers to operate as cabs

Committee chairman Peter Smith said: "We turned down the application on safety grounds as we were concerned Mr Tutton's vehicle was 10 years old. In America they only licence them for five years from new because of the nature of stretch limousines, as the wear and tear on the chassis could make them unsafe.

"It is also the council's policy not to licence left-hand drive cars because of the safety issue of driving these vehicles on the small country roads in South Norfolk, and the limited visibility."

He said the committee had "great sympathy" with Mr Tutton over his concerns that unlicensed taxi drivers are not required to undergo criminal record checks, and his wish to raise standards in the private hire sector.

"We are taking this to the Cabinet of South Norfolk, saying we want to review the situation and to let the Government know there should be a policy on private hire vehicles."

I can't work out why any council would much prefer un-licensed stretch limos, than the licensed ones. :?

I'm not a fan of the bloody things, but I feel that it's better that both drivers and vehicles are checked, than not. :sad:
