Taxis taken off road after failing checksTHREE taxis have been banned from the road after a sting operation in Farnborough.
Nine vechicles were found to be in breach of their licence conditions when 23 hackney carriages were stopped by police or council officers during a random inspection on Thursday July 5.
The operation was carried out jointly by Rushmoor Borough Council’s licensing team, Hampshire Constabulary’s roads policing unit and the Vehicle and Operators Services Agency (VOSA). After the taxis were stopped, they were asked to attend National Tyres and Autocare on Farnborough Road, where safety and licence checks were carried out.
Three vehicles were taken straight off the road by VOSA because their tyre treads were below the legal limit and all three drivers could receive points on their licence and a fine from police.
The other six vehicles were given inspection notices for minor defects which will need to be sorted out in the future, including an oil leak and failure to display a Hackney carriage driver’s badge.
Councillor Martin Tennant, chairman of Rushmoor Borough Council’s licensing and general purposes committee, said: “Members of the public have a right to expect all taxis in Rushmoor are safe and free from defects.
“We work closely with the taxi trade to ensure vehicles are maintained to a high standard, however this operation shows that there is always room for improvement.
“We will continue to work with the police and other partners to make sure drivers and vehicles in Rushmoor are reaching the proper standards.
“We will not tolerate unsafe vehicles operating in Rushmoor.”
