Harborne street being used as public toilet by taxi drivers claim residents

July 22 2012

Council bosses are investigating claims that taxi drivers are using a street in one of Birmingham’s poshest areas as a toilet.

The leafy suburb of Harborne is popular with high earners in the Second City, with houses regularly selling for hundreds of thousands of pounds.

But residents have complained that caught short Falcon Cars cabbies are using garages and waste land on Metchley Drive – close to the area’s high street – as a makeshift loo.

They also claim drivers are throwing food wrappers and drinks containers out of their motors.

The firm’s boss has apologised over their behaviour and warned drivers they face being kicked off his fleet unless they clean up their act.

Elaine Williams, Labour councillor for Harborne, dealt with the initial complaints, which have now been passed to Birmingham City Council’s housing team.

“I’ve had complaints from residents that taxi drivers are parking on Metchley Drive, next to a set of garages, and chucking empty food and drink containers on the ground,” Coun Williams told the Sunday Mercury."

“I’ve also been told that they are using the area opposite as a makeshift toilet. If correct, that is totally unacceptable and must stop."

“The garages are on council-owned land so I have passed details on to the council’s housing team who, I hope, will take action."

“I understand that taxi drivers need somewhere to wait between jobs but they should treat that area as if they lived there, rather than as a bin and toilet.”

Last night Falcon Cars’ managing director Ahmad Khan, said: “I want to offer my sincere apologies to those living around Metchley Drive.

Condemn

“I condemn anyone doing this and will send a message to all of them stating it must stop or they face being taken off our fleet.

“Any residents who see this happening should note down the registration number and give us their details.

“We will take action against that driver.”

A house on the neighbouring street, St Mary’s Road, is currently on the market for £750,000.

One resident, who did not want to be named, added: “It’s horrible. They tend to be there early in the morning or late at night.

“How would they like it if we went to their street and threw things on the ground and went to the toilet? I bet they wouldn’t.”

Officials at Birmingham City Council have promised to look into the problems and take steps to stop it. The garages, which belong to the local authority, are unused.

A council spokesman said: “The complaint is being fully investigated. We will contact anyone using the garages for any purpose as they are currently empty. We will ensure they are kept secure.”
