Little Lemon hits streets of Brighton

Thursday 19th July 2012

The Little Lemon taxi

With their bright yellow bodywork, Big Lemon buses have become a familiar sight across Brighton and Hove.

And now there’s a Little Lemon, too.

Where The Big Lemon initially offered an alternative choice in public buses, it now has its sights set on running a taxi service as well.

The city bus company, which operates a fleet of vehicles running on recycled cooking oil, bought an old London black cab in the spring.

It was soon rebranded as The Little Lemon and is now available for private hire.

Initially used as a staff vehicle, The Little Lemon has been attracting “a lot of attention” and staff haven’t ruled out a move into the city’s commercial taxi market.

Simon Pearson-Wood of The Big Lemon said: “We probably would buy more. Possibilities of a Little Lemon taxi service have been mentioned, although no serious plans have been made.

Colourful character

“If we did, we would try to compete in a similar way to how we compete in the bus market; a friendly service that’s kind to the environment and easy on the pocket.”

Like its bigger brothers, the Little Lemon also runs on used cooking oil and sports the same yellow paint job.

Mr Pearson-Wood said: “Due to its colour and character we have been receiving more and more requests for it to be hired out privately for all sorts of events.

“We used it to take four people to a festival in Scotland and to transport a family and their newly-adopted son to his christening.

“It’s even been booked alongside our coaches for wedding parties as a carriage for the bride and groom.

“It has surpassed the expectations we had for it. It’s a great little addition to the team.”

Working on the assumption that the vehicle has been licensed as a private hire vehicle. One has to ask why this particular requirement of the LG(MP)A 1976 was (apparently) overlooked, or ignored:-

S48(1)(a)(ii) - that the vehicle is - not of such design and appearance as to lead any person to believe that the vehicle is a hackney carriage:

It may be yellow - but it still looks like a hackney carriage to me!

That's probably because Brighton's head of licensing and the licensing councillors are vvankers!

Is it licensed as private hire, or is it running on one of those bus operators exemptions?

It shows just how stooopid some ppl are, who in their right mind would want to go to get married in an old rattling rusting TX ffs,

I hear B&Q sell a yellow in that shade, so Sussex will be able to paint his Mondeo on the cheap when this bus company sucks up the PH market in Brighton, which it looks like it's going to try to tbh.

I think it will be running on the bus operator exemption.

Indeed if that where the case you would be right, but this yellow thing will be operating under PSV rules by a firm who recently had their vehicles taken off the road because of the large amount of unpaid fuel duty.

Now, for the second time today, I will say this clear abuse will be made illegal if the Law Commission keep to their proposals and make all under 9 seaters be licensed as a taxi or a PH in a new cab act that many don't seem to want. :-k

Not true in respect of the former, and partly true in respect of the latter, especially the Blue ones.

Not sure the firm is big enough, but it can and will be running under small PSV regs.

But will defo be caught out over the separate fares issue. :D
