Sheffield taxi driver loses eye in attack

Image

THE family of a Sheffield taxi driver say his life has been ruined after he lost the sight of his right eye when he was struck with a bottle for telling a customer he was not allowed to drink alcohol in his cab.

Arshad Mahmood, aged 40, of Nether Edge, who was working for City Taxis, was attacked on Fox Hill Road.

An operation failed to save the eye.

His wife Arsheed Mahmood said: “Normal life has stopped, our world has been turned upside down. This is an injury which has ruined my husband’s life.”

Police are appealing for witnesses to the assault, which was on Tuesday last week, at about 11pm. They have arrested a suspect.

You know what I want to say that every time something dreadful happens, but I'm worried I will be seen as a one trick pony.

However you are right to bang on about CCTV.

It's not a panacea to all our woes, but it's about the best we have got at present.

I don't believe that CCTV in cabs will stop this kind of attack. It may help in identifying the culprit but someone who is intoxicated would not give a toss about CCTV. i mean, at what point of the attack is the driver going to remind the attacker about the CCTV. #-o
