Taxi driver arrested at gunpoint in Cumbernauld SIX armed police officers arrested a man driving a taxi at gunpoint in Cumbernauld yesterday morning, as part of an operation between Scottish and English forces. ARMED police have arrested a man at gunpoint in an operation between Scottish and English forces. Six officers with automatic weapons surrounded a taxi on the A80 in Cumbernauld yesterday morning. The scene unfolded close to where three men were killed in a car crash on Wednesday. Witnesses say a man who appeared to be of Asian origin was standing with his hands on the vehicle, a silver Citroen Berlingo operated by local cab firm Central Cars. He was being questioned by police, who had stopped the taxi by blocking its path with one of their vehicles. Police refused to confirm or deny whether the operation was linked to any anti-terror investigation. Last night, Metropolitan Police said a 29-year-old man from Lambeth, in London, had been arrested by Strathclyde Police on behalf of the Met’s Kidnap Unit for breaching bail conditions. He had originally been arrested over offences including possession of a firearm, kidnap and actual bodily harm. A spokesman added: “It is not related to counter-terrorism.” Last night, the suspect was held without charge by Strathclyde Police. Central Cars refused to comment on the incident. http://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/news/scott ... ld-1214810 |

Taxi driver's terror after passenger arrested at gunpoint A CENTRAL CARS taxi driver was left terrified after armed police stopped his car in Cumbernauld to arrest a passenger A TAXI driver was left terrified after armed police swooped on his cab to arrest a passenger. Central Cars boss Charlie Jeffery has told how his stunned worker was pulled over and surrounded by six gun officers. The officers then arrested a man the driver had picked up moments earlier from a hotel in Cumbernauld, near Glasgow, on Friday morning. It later emerged the hire was suspected of kidnapping and firearm offences and had breached bail conditions in England. Jeffery said: “Our driver was left pretty shaken by the whole thing. “Everyone has been having a laugh about it now, but at the time it was pretty terrifying for the guy.” http://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/news/scott ... ce-1230111 |
