Council agrees to drivers’ plea to raise taxi fares TAXI fares are to increase in Test Valley. Hackney carriage drivers had asked for the rise in charges, a request which was granted by Test Valley Borough councillors. Test Valley currently charges £5 for the first two miles on its daytime tariff, compared with rates of £6.20 in Winchester, £5.80 in Southampton, £5.80 in the New Forest and £6.10 in Eastleigh. Now this will increase to £5.40 – 1p more than the national average, but 45p less than the area average. Hackney carriages may legally charge no more than the maximum fare set by the council – such fares do not apply to private hire vehicles, which can charge what they wish. The Test Valley Taxi Association, which represents a large number of taxi proprietors, had argued that the fees had not changed since March last year. At a licensing meeting, in Andover, councillors heard that the request was a fairly minimal increase. Council members quizzed licensing manager, Michael White, who recommended approving the scheme, on whether this would lead to minicabs undercutting the association due to the increase. But Mr White said that the increase was the maximum fare that taxis can charge, so this would not necessarily be what is charged. Robin Pike, of the Test Valley Taxi Association, said: “We decided a year ago we wouldn’t put in for a single increase to put us in line with the rest of the area. But my reasoning is simple - in urban ares the best fare rate is "cheap" as drivers should strive to do lots of jobs at low margins - in rural areas the jobs are fewer and so it has to be fewer jobs at higher margins so "expensive". In the intermediate areas you have intermedite fare tariffs. Of course it is all to bollux when Cab numbers are not limited in an urban area - so prices for customers go up in all Taxis and PH. This post of yours was better than the one you edited it from tcabbie.

So who do you think would sit in a nice office in London and caculate all this Sussex? Every time fuel goes up or down it would need re-doing. Insurance costs changing all the time. Vehicle purchase prices. Too many variables and I have only scratched the surface and gone for the obvious. Will not happen - the current system will remain in place. |

I sugested this type of formula to our LO, I had looked at the way it is done on the Isle of Wight. The LO came back with the proposal to link the fares to the price of baked beans. |

The beauty of a fares formula is that once adopted it rises in line with our costs (via AA running costs) and average local earnings (via the NOS). In truth it's a bit of a no-brainer. |

A council can adapt it when they are compiling it, and can make it come out to just about anything. But the point is once adopted it will go up in line with our running costs and the local average pay. Asking for average local pay shouldn't be that hard for the local trade to lobby for. |

Our council are just going to use the retail price index. |
