Burnley taxi firms fined after records check

Two Burnley private hire taxi operators have been fined for not keeping records of fares. Two men both pleaded guilty to failing to keep proper records at Reedley Magistrates’ Court.

Zahid Aslam, operator of City Ronnies Cars in St James’s Street, was fined £250 and ordered to pay £125 in costs. Arshad Beg, operator of Home and Away based in Gunsmith Place, was fined £400 and ordered to pay £125 costs.

Enforcement officers from Burnley Borough Council carried out inspections of both premises in April and found that records of bookings taken were not being recorded correctly.

John Yardley, one of the council’s licensing officers, said: “All booking offices are inspected to ensure compliance with the operating licence. Keeping proper records of bookings and fares is important as they are frequently used by the police and council officers in dealing with complaints and inquiries. It is also a legal requirement.

“The standard of records kept in these two cases fell well short despite improvement warnings having previous been given.”

Coun. Howard Baker, the council’s Executive member for housing and environment, said: “It is our duty to ensure that residents and visitors using our taxis are safe and, therefore, it is necessary that taxi firms are maintaining legal records and being compliant with our regulations.

“We are pleased with the result of the cases as it shows we have a zero-tolerance approach to these matters.”
