For cabbies, London 'dead as a dodo'

August 8, 2012

London -- Caught a couple of cab rides today, first to NBA House in central London to interview Dwyane Wade and then to Russell Square to catch a bus for the main press center.

I asked one cabbie if he was having a profitable couple weeks and he said, "Not at all. London is as dead as a dodo." He said August was a slow month, anyway, and he suspected many Londoners who work in the city had gone on vacation to avoid the Olympic hassle.

He gestured to the shops around Covent Garden and said, "Normally, this place is packed with people. There's nobody here. The schools are shut."

Maybe that's why he was especially grateful when I gave him a one-pound tip ...
