Taxi driver left with £3,000 repair bill to his car after potholes on a single road wreck five tyres and three wheels A furious taxi driver has been lumbered with a whopping £3,000 repair bill after sustaining damage to his car by driving down a heavily potholed road in Devon. Angry Peter Moore branded the bumpy road near Axminster the worst in the county after he was forced to fork out thousands of pounds for the repairs. Mr Moore said his Honda Accord estate had sustained three broken wheels, a broken bumper and under covers, a smashed engine sensor, and five wrecked tyres - all from driving down the pockmarked road. ![]() Enlarge Battered: Peter Moore had to pay the £3,000 repair bill after his car struggled with potholes on a road near Axminster, Devon The taxi driver believes that the rattling, shaking and bumping his car underwent as it passed down the road is entirely responsible for the damage. He believes that the county council has turned a blind eye to the maintaining of the lane between Colyton and Umborne. The Colyford driver also said that the highways authority is refusing to pay for the repairs to his car, and means of livelihood. The cabbie believes that the road has got into such a dire state because of water escaping from a blocked culvert and running across the surface of the lane. The water causes deep holes and becomes an icy hazard throughout the winter months. The taxi driver believes that the measures which have been taken to sort the problem on the road out are wholly inadequate. Mr Moore said that occasionally work is done on the lane, but it is just to fill in the individual potholes. The cabbie said: 'They did pay me around £1,000 compensation around three years ago, after I first claimed for damage to the car. Bumpy: Richard Parkhouse, another Davon taxi driver, said that the state of the road is 'shocking' 'But now they don't want to know. I think they have run out of money. 'They are supposed to go and check the road every six weeks but, if they do, all I can say is they obviously have no sense or feelings.' He added: 'Driving along that lane literally rattles your teeth out. 'I pay £440 a year in road tax and this lane should be done up.' Mr Moore's son Dominic said the blocked culvert alongside the lane led to water pouring across the surface 24 hours a day. He said: 'It was reported to South West Water about three years ago. 'But they denied responsibility and all the county council does is come along and fill in potholes every now and again. 'If they resurfaced the lane properly there would be no problem. 'They filled in the holes again about three weeks ago and it is coming out already.' Mr Moore is not the only one to have suffered at the hands of the potholed lane. Another local driver, Richard Parkhouse, who regularly travels along the lane, said the road is in a 'shocking' state. Mr Parkhouse said: 'It is shocking. I have been here for over six years and it has always been the same.Work needs to be done.' A Devon County Council spokesman said that the safety defects on the road were being repaired. source: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article ... z23cj1Gr9M |
