Taxi driver misses fare but helps out medics in Colchester

A TAXI driver has been praised for his efforts after giving a lift to a stranded air ambulance crew. The air ambulance was called to Colchester to deal with a man who had been taken ill at home.

The pilot could not find anywhere close to land, so had to bring the helicopter down in a field and try to flag down a car. Cabbie Pete Andrews came to the rescue.

He drove the doctor and paramedic to the house so they could help ambulance crews deal with the emergency. Pete didn’t put the meter on.

John McCusker, air ambulance paramedic, said: “We were called to a medical emergency at a private home in Colchester. “We needed to get there to help an ambulance crew at the scene, but had to land in a nearby park.

“It would have been a bit of a walk and we obviously had to get there as soon as possible, so our pilot ran to flag down a car. “She managed to flag down Pete, who found a quicker way there.”

They were unable to confirm the precise location or nature of the call, in order to protect the patient’s privacy. Mr McCusker said: “We knew roughly where to go from the air, but can’t just land anywhere and needed help. “We also have to carry a lot of equipment so we want to say thank you very much to Pete.”

Pilot Nicki Smith, a former RAF Search and Rescue pilot, said: “We rely on kind-hearted people like Pete to help us on occasions and want to thank him very much.” The casualty was taken to Colchester General Hospital for emergency treatment.

Top draw is that, I wonder if the Police would've been so thankful if a cabbie helped them get to a scene of crime??
