Sarah Boyack tells us in the Evening News that 30% of women are afraid to walk the streets at night.

So, tell us again, why is the number of taxis in Edinburgh artificially restricted?

Do we have a responsible Council, or a Council that is responsible?

To keep people like you (journeymen) away from owning your own licensed taxi.

Unless of course you wish to wet someone's beak.

Thanks for proving the argument.

More idiots on the streets, then you need more taxis to get the decent people off the streets and protect them.

Imagine. Female can't get a taxi home safely, and one of your idiots has greater opportunity to harm her.

But that's OK with you. Cos you've got a plate value to protect.

You truly are a feckwit.

Let's hope it's not your daughter or wife, eh?

BTW Would you talk to your taxi mates at your daughter's funeral about how chuffed you are to have a plate value?

Wise up ye [edited by admin] idiot! U are a total bore.
Idiots in the town most nights or every night and its [edited by admin] all to do with taxis or women needing to flag one.
9 times out of ten they could probably flag one down no problem but to blame people being attacked on there not being enough taxis is just a pile of [edited by admin] .

You confuse me with someone who cares about you.

We all know you're just a selfish plate wannabee.

Now answer the question. Your daughter fails to hail a cab because they're restricted, she has to walk home and she's attacked. Or she knows taxis are hard to get and she accepts a lift from an acquaintance who assaults her because he's stupid and thinks that no means yes.

And you think what, precisely?

Oh yes. Taxis should be restricted because the boys are working a vested interest.

What a hero you are.

=D>

What kind of father would that make you?

Who's winging, we are merely trying to prevent vulnerable women from being raped because vested interests want to turn a quick buck? #-o

Really? So answer the question?

Your daughter?

Would you be supporting taxi restriction with your taxi mates at your daughters funeral after she was murdered because
she couldn't hail a cab and fell prey to a rapist?

How pish are you bright boy?

Go on. Answer the question.

Then think how bad your greed is for all our business. How many women no longer bother to venture out because they know they have no chance of hailing a cab, and won't take the risk?

Licence restriction restricts all our business.

=D> greedo.

I am in an Unrestricted Area.

When the Clubs come out, there will always be insufficient Taxis to handle the rush. Regardless of the number of Plates available.

So I repeat what I said with a difference. You're talking emotional tosh, in an attempt to justify your argument.

If it is any consolation, I agree with you.

Restriction is wrong, but then De-Restriction leads to a plethora of vehicles and no-one gets sufficient business to survive in the luxury to which they have become accustomed!

I think that there is no correct solution.

Maybe London has it right. Make the entry qualification so hard that only a few have the memory to pass.

We've never said that de-restriction was the whole answer.

Just that councils can't claim to be protecting public safety if they haven't done everything the can to protect public safety. Artificially restricting taxis falls well below the simple benchmark of doing everything possible.

One day a member of the public harmed by this policy will sue the council. And I'll be contacting them to encourage them to do so.

Which brings us back to the problem with the clubs.

The problem is caused, in our case in Edinburgh, by the cops, who pressed for all the clubs to close at one time. This created the problem of overcrowding on the streets. They created the peak period, presumably because they thought it made policing easier. or was it just cheaper?

This is madness. The public doesn't want it. The clubs don't want it. Cabbies don't want it.

And the drinking deadline encoprages bingeing as it draws near.

And we pay the price having to deal with an alcohol fuelled public in a fell swoop, who take umbrage because they have to queue or walk to hail a cab.

Thing is, our trade does nothing. Because it doesn't affect rentals, or radio dues. They have to be paid whatever the business level so the owners sitting on their farnies while the serfs deal with all the shecht aren't motivated to articulate the arguments.

So, the problem isn't just the restriction. It's the trade itself. Which would rather give its customers to PH than address their needs to keep their custom.

=D> to the trade barons eh?
