Council vetoes licensees’ taxi rank bid

PUBS and bars in Bawtry look to have lost a bid for the town’s own taxi rank. Pubwatch Scheme members are keen to see a rank established to benefit the day and night time economy but Bawtry Town Council has concluded the current Traffic Regulation Order does not allow provision for such a facility.

Councillors also fear there would be considerable wear and tear to the surface of Market Hill if the rank was located there, and additional costs would be incurred in providing taxi marshals.

Meanwhile, the council has decided to increase the charging time on the Excel Parking Services-managed Market Hill pay and display car park from 8pm to 10pm.

After an in-depth discussion at their monthly meeting, councillors agreed to the two-hour extension starting in November. They felt that because of the high number of licensed premises, some of which are open into the early hours, more and more use is being made of the car park, which is owned by the town council.

Following a suggestion put to them by the management of The Crown Hotel, councillors agreed that a tick-over tariff would be introduced.

If a ticket for two hours were to be purchased at 7pm it would cover from 8am to 9am the next morning. Excel is to install new solar powered ticket machines at no cost to the town council.

I think that's just typical councillors adding extra weight to their reasons for vetoing the plan...

Bawtry isn't that big. It's one of them towns if you blink you've missed it.

I know the bit of land the Council are on about, it's a parade of shops and a few boozers on the high street set back off the road with a car park in front of them, this is the same land the Council want to keep so they can keep raping the motorist for parking fees.
