Taxi driver locked up for asking friend to take speeding points

A TAXI driver has been jailed for a year after asking a friend to help him dodge four speeding tickets. Nisar Alam feared a six-month disqualification but has now been banned from driving for two years.

Derby Crown Court heard that he came up with the deception after his vehicle was caught four times by speed cameras in three months up to December 17 last year. Papers were sent to Alam's home in Clarence Road, Derby.

He ordered his wife to send them back to police, saying the cab was being driven by Polish builder Zbigniew Matyna, 46, of Balaclava Road, Derby. The pair pleaded guilty to conspiracy to pervert the course of justice.

Matyna, who had never been in trouble before, was given a six-month prison term, which was suspended for a year. He must do 40 hours' unpaid work and pay £310 prosecution costs.

Recorder Ciaran Rankin said Alam, 42, showed a "controlling hand" in making his wife take part. "It was very unattractive that you turned to a friend and persuaded him that he should take the blame for your actions," he said.

Sarah Allen, prosecuting, said Alam already had penalty points on his licence and felt the speeding convictions would lead to a ban. All the speeding offences were late at night in the Ilkeston and Heanor area, where he was operating as a cabbie.

Alam then contacted John Richardson, who runs Ilkeston-based Avenger Taxis, asking him to alter his drivers' records. "Alam admitted to Mr Richardson that he was the driver and said a friend – a Polish guy – would take the points for him and he would pay the fine," said Miss Allen. "Mr Richardson refused the request and made a statement to the police." Alam had also pointed out the location of the speed cameras to Matyna, a friend who had carried out work on his home.

Christopher Gabbitas, for Alam, said: "It is quite clear from the papers and the pre-sentence reports that these are the actions of a desperate man. "As a taxi driver for 25 years, he realised that, with being caught speeding, his livelihood would be taken away from him.

"Foolishly, he has acted in the way he has. "This is a man who is hard-working and honest. He has five children and is the sole breadwinner in that family."

Stephen Cooper, for Matyna, said he sent cash home to his family in Poland. He added: "If he doesn't send that money to them, he will lose his house."

There seems to be a pattern when someone gets points, they get the points then they ask someone else to take the points for them.

If it wasn't for Mr Richardson at Avenger Taxis he would've got away with it scott free. =D> =D>

Speed Cameras can catch the best of people out, Its not always easy looking at your speedo at all times in traffic and you can creep over the speed limit relatively easily on any road, But 4 times in 3 months is a tad excessive.
