I along with all other Birmingham trade reps received the following email yesterday. The name of the sender has been withheld for obvious reasons. There were 10 photos attached to the email, which I will attempt to post later.

'At the meeting I attended with yourself and representatives of the Taxi Association on 24th August 2012 the Chair and Secretary of the association were at pains to stress that their members were complying with the restrictions and 'Just trying to make a living' and asked for a 'Lenient Approach towards enforcement'

I would ask you to look at the below photographs I took today of Taxi's parked / ranking along Suffolk Street Queensway in the bus lane, forcing busses to use the main carriageway and reducing the traffic flow, Ranking / parked around the 90 degree bend into Suffolk Place forcing vehicles turning left onto the wrong side of the road. Taxis are then parked / ranking all along Suffolk Place around the 90 degree left hand bend again forcing me to travel on the wrong side of the road around a blind bend to be met with a van coming towards me. At this point I had to reverse.

Vehicles were being waived past the Taxis on the wrong side of the road approaching the Zebra Crossing, so as to be forcing vehicles to contravene the Road Traffic Act by overtaking on the approach to a Zebra Crossing.

When the taxi driver saw me taking photographs they became agitated wanting to know who I was, and made it clear they were waiting to go to the station and made no attempt to move on.

It is clear that the Taxi Association and there members have no intention of trying to restrict ranking / parking in this area and expect the City Council to "Adopt a lenient approach". We have received numerous complaints from the public and there have been a number of minor collisions directly as a result of the illegal ranking and parking. It is clear that a zero policy of enforcement coordinated with the police is the only way forward to address this issue.'

I wonder how many of the "rank" cars were not on a circuit, having to wait for a walk-in fare

dont any of them decide to rent a radio and avoid the long wait?

About 600 are on a radio circuit, leaving about 800 as indepentents.

But the wait for a radio job can sometimes be an hour or more, so independents are likely to work just as quickly.

I would suggest offering the council a deal whereby taxis only work every other day thus cutting down the over ranking BUT the council provides additional housing benefit and assistance to the drivers in obtaining additional income support from the Government etc etc.to compensate for the loss of earnings

Damn right, and it is much less likely to be a wheelchair, or crappy little account job.

I have tried a radio in Brum and it was RUBBISH!!!

New St station is the only place you can guarantee to work within the hour, why can't the "Brains" at the council come up with a route into the station where we are not getting in everyone's way. Surely it can't be that difficult, they caused the problem by releasing too many plates.
