No black cabs for Walsall revellers

Black cabs will stop running in Walsall town centre for 24 hours amid safety fears over two rival protests, leading to fears revellers could be left stranded following nights out.

Around 100 taxis will be off the road between 8am tomorrow and 8am on Sunday.

It means people on a night out in Walsall on Saturday will not be able to hail a cab to get home.

Walsall Hackney Carriage Association said it is suspending services after some drivers raised concerns over safety and disruption in the town because of the protests.

The English Defence League will hold a static protest in Leicester Street tomorrow while opposition groups, including faith groups, will hold a simultaneous static protest in Gallery Square.

Mirza Khalid, chairman of the Hackney Carriage Association, said: “There is going to be no black cabs on Saturday.

“The main reason is safety. We apologise to the travelling public.”

But private hire drivers said it would be business as usual and that services would continue to run.

More than 800 police officers will be on patrol for the protests tomorrow.

Mike Bird, leader of Walsall Council, said he was “extremely disappointed” that black cabs would not be running because council bosses had been trying to promote the message of business as usual in the town.

He said: “Private hire drivers will still be working and it could be a busy night so we would encourage people to book them.”

Councillor Mohammed Arif, representative for the St Matthew’s ward, said: “I understand the difficulties this is going to put the public in.

“It does make sense for people to think in advance and look to book a private hire taxi in advance.”

Normally I could understand that point, but this isn't about the pros and cons of the taxi/PH licensing system, but about a protest against a group of neanderthals.

And how many neanderthals actually bothered to turn up ? I think the protest may have had more to do with politics than an actual real threat to safety ?

Walsall English Defence League march sees 28 arrests

Police have made 28 arrests following a demonstration by the English Defence League (EDL) in Walsall town centre.

West Midlands Police said up to 1,000 people gathered at the EDL event and at a counter-demonstration.

Witnesses said a small number suddenly charged the police cordon and threw bottles, bricks, and dustbins.

A small number of protesters and police officers suffered minor cuts and bruises during the disorder, but no serious injuries were reported.

Riot officers used batons to try to contain the disorder.

EDL supporters met in Leicester Street from mid-morning, with speakers taking to the stage during the afternoon.

A counter-event of 500 people took place in Gallery Square.

Democratic right

The arrests followed minor disorder which lasted for about 10 minutes as the EDL event ended, police said.

Ch Supt Dave Sturman, commander for Walsall, said: "The majority of people attending the two demonstrations were peaceful and law abiding. Unfortunately a small number of people at the Leicester Street site became a little more aggressive and there was minor disorder for around ten minutes.

"Arrests were made where necessary and further enquiries will be made to determine if any other offences were committed."

He added that it had generally been a successful operation due to work between police, partner agencies and community representatives.

"A great deal of mediation also went on behind the scenes with both the EDL and counter-protest organisers to enable them to exercise their democratic right to protest," he said.

"That negotiation led to the two groups employing their own stewards who played a significant role in attempting to maintain order."

Mr Ram Mehmi, president of the Shri Guru Ravidass Cultural Association in Darlaston, and a member of Walsall Independent Advisory Group, was involved in viewing the police operation throughout the day.

He said: "I have been in a position to see the full police operation as it played out and have been impressed by all I have seen.

"Police were very well organised and the tactical options they used in very difficult circumstances went well to make sure that the safety of the public was secure."

Exactly just 500 at each event when 1000's were expected plenty of police about not really a problem surely
