Minor convictions could cost cab jobs Taxi and private hire drivers in Bedford claim that they may not be able to renew their licences because of tighter rules on criminal convictions.
Drivers welcome the move, which
started in January 2011 and affects drivers at the time of licence renewal, but they claim that cabbies with minor spent
convictions could be affected.
Balal Shah, spokesman for Bedford’s private hire drivers, said: “I fully support the CRB system and played a pivotal part in bringing that in.
“But drivers who have been working for the past 20 years without problems, yet have a minor criminal conviction such as no insurance, could be banned from
driving a cab for 10 years.
“Drivers have been previously allowed to drive with a minor conviction but
under the new measures they could lose their job even if they only made one
mistake. For minor convictions this is a serious concern but for severe convictions I fully agree with this policy.”
A Borough Hall spokesman said: “All licensing applications are judged on their individual merits. Between September 1 and October 31, 2012, five licensing
applications were refused. Of these, four applicants were found to have been
convicted of a violent offence and one applicant had failed the Basic English Assessment for such licensees and there were also two sexual offence allegations against the applicant.”
