Newport taxi fees plan out for discussion

PROPOSALS to raise fees for taxi drivers in Newport have gone out for a second city council consultation.

Officers at the council are nowasking taxi drivers what they think of a proposal to have a more across-theboard increase in fees with no special increase in fees for vehicles over 12-years-old.

The proposals for extra fees for vehicles over 12-years-old had been controversial with some taxi drivers arguing it would bring in a taxi age limit by the back door.

However, Labour councillor Allan Morris, chairman of the licensing committee which decided to go to consultation, said the council could still go back to the original proposals.

“We understand that times are difficult for the trade but naturally we want the highest standard of vehicles and driver that we can,” he said.

Officers at Newport council had proposed to raise the cost of vehicle fees, operator licences and badge charges to cover a £65,000 deficit in the cost of running the service.

But under the new proposals taxi licences for a vehicle older than 12 years old will be the same as a licence for a car more than three years old – £242 a year.

A so-called “Green incentive”

discount of up to 25 per cent on operator licences, offered where taxis are exempt from road tax, is also being looked at. However, driver’s badges and operator licences would be more expensive than originally planned.

The proposals still cover the cost of the council providing services for taxi drivers.

The new 28-day consultation was approved at a meeting on November 13, where members of the licensing committee also met members of the trade.

Andrew Barley, director of Dragon Taxis, said although he understood the council needed to cover its deficit, the proposals were causing hassle to taxi drivers who were earning less money because of the state of the city.

“We have had to take our meters out of our cars because tariffs are too high.

Takings are just dropping all the time,” he said.

So to make more money they drop their fares?

Can you just take the meter out of a Hackney? I assume that they are Hackneys because the company is called Dragon Taxis. Do they also not realise that they can, if they wish, charge less than the fare on the meter?

He is an ex fireman - and very two faced. You can bet that he has an agenda re the taxis.

Instead of streamlining the Licensing department, he will be looking to the taxi drivers to pay and bail them out. I am just wondering as to how much of a bearing on the finances of the licencing dept - was the cost of losing their case against the taxi drivers!!!!

They are a mixture of hackney and PH. Their PH cars had metres in and charged the same as the hacks.. They took them all out due to other firms in the city charging silly low prices.
